The Ole Ball Coach

I have my first real amusing Steve Spurrier anecdote. Most of you may recall one of my first conversations with Gamecock Basketball Coach Dave Odom about good places to go jogging in the area. Well my first official conversation with Steve Spurrier was eerily similar. Yesterday, I was waddling down the hallway in Williams-Brice Stadium, when the Ole Ball Coach emerged from the locker room with a bandana around his head (Rambo Style) a pair of little running shorts and a sleeveless tee-shirt, a truly remarkable outfit. This is how our conversation went:

SS- Hey Big man, How are ya doing today?
KD- Doing well coach, how about yourself?
SS- Doing great, just going to get a little run in today before lunch.
KD- Oh yeah, that is a good thing.
SS- You going to get a workout or a little run in today?
KD- Uuuhhhh……………………..I’m not sure coach, I have some things to do.
SS- Well it is a great day to start big fella, great day to start.
KD- Alright coach, have a good run.
SS- Alrighty, see ya later.

One half hour later I am leaving the stadium to go to my car and Spurrier is walking in after his jog.

KD- Did ya geta good one in coach?
SS- Yep, got me thirty good minutes. You going to get your workout clothes in the car.
KD- Tommorrow coach

So that is my first 100% official conversation with the great Steve Orr Spurrier. I figured most of you would get a kick out of that story.

Fuck Hollywood

I was looking through some past posts on my websites and I realized how much the readers enjoyed my review of movies. I then was wondering what was the last new movie I saw, and I couldn’t remember. In fact, it was sometime in February, during Oscar season. Then I was looking at one of my favorite websites (www.IMDB.com) and seeing if there have been any movies that I have missed. And you know what, no there are no movies I have missed.

Here is what is hot at the box office: Guess Who, Kings Ransom, Sahara, Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy, Gong Fu, A lot like Love, Fever Pitch, seriously folks this is the best we could come up with. These movies star such superb actors as Ashton Kutcher, Matthew McGonehay, Anthony Anderson, Drew Barrymore, Jimmy Fallon, and some midget from the Leprechaun movies. So I decided to see what was going to be coming out a little later this month.

Here again is a list, with a synopsis and stars:

Kingdom of Heaven: Orlando Bloom fights a whole bunch of people in a crusades period piece, as Ridley Scott tries to re-capitalize on Gladiator, Braveheart, Troy et. al.

House of Wax: Starring Paris Hilton, Elisha Cuthbert, Chad Michael Murray? (who?, I hate three named actors). About some college students whose car breaks down and they get scared in a museum or something. The writer of this movie got his start penning Baywatch episodes; boy can’t wait for this one.

Crash: About the 80th movie with this name. Again, some tragic event brings a group of strangers together and weird stuff happens, never seen this movie before. And it also has the three words that make me run from the theatre: STARRING, SANDRA BULLOCK. Also has Matt Dillon, Don Cheadle, Bendan Fraser, and the great Ludacris. Unfortunately it was written by the very talented Paul Haggis.

Monster in Law: Typical my parents don’t like my new boyfriend crap. Starring, and this may make you throw up, Jennifer Lopez, Michael Vartan (the dude from Alias who Jennifer Garner broke up with to date Affleck), Jane Fonda, and Wanda Sykes.

Kicking & Screaming: Will Ferrell’s new effort about a bumbling father coaching a youth soccer team. Again, Ferrell’s two starring roles were Elf and Anchorman, both horrific movies. He is better as the comic relief and not the star. (I.e. Old School, Austin Powers, and Jay & Silent Bob).

xXx: State of the Union: The first one was such a run away success; they have decided to change stars. And in an unbelievable quirk they were able to downgrade from Vin Diesel to Ice Cube.

And to top it all off, black people have decided to ruin the greatest television shows of all time by making a movie out of The Honeymooners. Cedric the Entertainer and Mike Epps have been tabbed to play Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton. Are you fucking kidding me? Hey, I think Cedric is a funny mother fucker, I love his stand up, but he is no Jackie Gleason. And Mike Epps as Ed Norton, replacing the incredible talented and gifted Art Carney. Mike Epps, Mike fucking Epps. Art Carney is one of the great actors ever, and made a character that is one of the most indelible in the history of television and /or cinema. And some ass in Hollywood green lighted a project where they were going to let some no talent ass clown like Mike Epps play Ed Norton. I am going to be sick

On the brighter side I am very excited for Star Wars and Cinderella Man. Otherwise, it seems as if this summer is very light on the entertainment side,

Upside, down

What a day it is going to be. The NFL Draft, which I agree is overrated, is great theatre, I just love it. Then the NBA playoffs begin later today with 4 games. I am not going anywhere people. As much as I think Bill Simmons (ESPN Page 2 Columnist “The Sports Guy”) is one of the 5 worst sports journalists in America the one idea that he has down well is the “Diary.” I love doing these things on a day like today. Here it is, my diary today, Saturday April 23, 2005:

8:54- Just woke up, have to get my bearings straight and get my food ready before the draft begins at noon.

9:06- Draft Preview reveals the 49ers, who have had approximately 5 months to make this decision, still are unsure on what they will do with the pick.

11:22- 48 minutes until draft time, and in all the pre-draft coverage I have yet to hear the word upside, simply amazing.

12:17- For Pete’s sake just choose Alex Smith already. I always hate the team that picks first, they just waste my time. Nobody is going to give you anything worthwhile in a trade, let’s get this show on the road.

12:26- Oh my, the 49ers and Coach Mike Nolan who said things would be shaken up at the top of this draft, chose Alex Smith, just what everyone predicted. Good things we needed all that time to decide.

12:40- Ronnie Brown to the Dolphins, that is the safe and solid pick, especially for a team whose best running back is currently studying Yoga in India.

12:54- Braylon Edwards to Cleveland, again things going according to plan. Let the Aaron Rogers free fall watch officially begin, if Tampa does not choose him at 6 it could be a long day.

1:09- Cedric Benson just got the ultimate curse, being drafted as a running back by the Chicago Bears, check Curtis Enis and Rashaan Salaam.

1:22- Cadillac Williams to the Bucs. Jon Gruden will find a ways to use this guy. I love the Cadillac, he is a production guy. When I watched him in college all I knew was it was very hard for the opposing team to tackle him. I do not know his 40 time, his vertical, his hands out of the backfield, his wonderlick score, all I know is he is tough to take down, and that can never be a negative in a running back. Think about this, he holds the Auburn record for rushing TD’s, and that is with playing with the #2 pick in the draft and other great Auburn backs like James Brooks and Vincent Edward Jackson.

1:25- Aaron Rodgers has left the green room, and he is now falling faster than a Tibetan Serpa at Mt. Everest Summit Base Camp. (Cha Cha)

1:32- Cadillac Williams just had the quote of the Millennium: When talking about his bets with Ronnie Brown on who would be taken first and who will have a better rookie season, Williams said, “he may have won the war, but the battle is still going.” Gotta love that Auburn education shinning through.

1:48- A cheer just arose from the entire state of South Carolina. Troy Williamson was just drafted by the Minnesota Vikings. This is a great fit for Troy, even though he is seen as replacing Randy Moss. Troy can fly up and down the field, the will send him deep, often, and we know Daunte Culpepper throws the best deep ball in the game. Good Luck Troy, he will be an excellent player for the Vikings.

2:13- Carlos Rogers goes to the Redskins. Why this guy got taken so late eludes me. Jim Thorpe Award Winner, 1st Team All-America, 4.4 40 yd dash, what was wrong with this guy? He made plays, plain and simple. Aaron Rodgers and Mike Williams are lost; maybe they are not actually in this draft. Who knows where these guys will go.

2:18- Chris Berman just said it best; Joey Harrington has no more excuses. Each of the last 3 seasons they have chosen arguably the best receiver in the draft (Charles Rogers & Roy Williams) and now they choose Mike Williams. Wow, what a pick, this team’s offense could go off the charts.

2:27- The New York Giants are now on the……ummm…no, that’s right, it is the San Diego Chargers on the clock, lord knows the Giants couldn’t use any help on there team right now, like say a receiver.

2:42- The San Diego Chargers are doing well for themselves. Shawne Merriman is a very good player, that hybrid Outside Backer/ Defensive End. Great pick for the Chargers, boy the Giants couldn’t use this guy at all.

3:01- Just saw the Yankees score, they are down 6-1 at home to Texas, they fucking blow. This is beginning to get real bad for the Yanks.

3:05- The Carolina Panthers made the big jump of the draft, choosing safety Thomas Davis from Georgia. This guy makes plays, but he is a tweener, and this is a little high for him, considering LB Derrick Johnson and OT Alex Barron are both still out there. Hey Aaron Rodgers, go home, you are never getting picked, he just keeps losing money.

3:29- No new surprises in the draft, however the 76ers are storming out to a big lead against the Pistons, that Allen Iverson is better than you.

3:43- Bobby, your Bungles picked David Pollack a little bit high. This guy produced on the field every season. (Yes Craig, Chris Berman and Torry Holt each said Motor 3 times when describing Pollack). Marvin Lewis is a very good defensive football coach and he will find different places on the field to put Mr. Pollack.

3:48- I have yet to hear the word upside, or Maurice Clarett’s name, simply amazing, these guys are losing their touch.

4:07- Bill Parcells knows exactly what he is doing. He is now showing that he has control over the personnel moves there in Big D. He wanted to get DeMarcus Ware and Marcus Spears, and that is exactly who they got. Remember last year they traded down in Round 1 and got Julius Jones, and in return got this second 1st Round pick.

4:16- Just as this Draft was getting boring, my man Jack Del Rio goes and pulls the shocker by taking Matt Jones in the mid first round. I have long believed he is the best athlete in the Southeastern Conference over the last 4 years. I also think he is suffering from reverse racism as he is analyzed; they keep talking about him as a Tight End or an H-Back. Well if he were black and his size and speed he would be known as, Mike Williams but because he is white many refer to him as a Tight End. He is receiver, who cares what the color of his skin is.

4:44- Finally Aaron Rodgers was chosen. Only about four and a half hours after he thought he might go. The Green Bay Packers made a good pick, this guy has top 10 potential and to try and have a succession plan for Brett Favre is a good thing. I think you will now see the Packers go exclusively defense from here on out. By the way the Pistons are now kicking the 76ers butt!!!

4:57- The Redskins are just becoming Auburn north. They now went with QB Jason Campbell with the #25 pick. Of course 3 days ago when they acquired this pick they denied that it was to pick Jason Campbell and that they were pleased with their Quarterback situation.

5:24- The Atlanta Falcons choose Ron Mexico!!!!!! That joke will never get old, actually they took Roddy White, they speedster from UAB. The only problem with that pick is the fact that their QB doesn’t throw the ball.

5:32- With 1:24 remaining in the game the great Darko Milicic checks into the Psitons/76ers game. Good thing they wasted a #2 pick on this dude. Super-Duper Star Chris Webber snatch a robust 3 rebounds in 36 minutes. Kyle Korver had 3 boards in as many minutes, Andre Iguodala 4 boards in 26 minutes. Heck Chauncy Billups & Lindsey Hunter had as many rebounds. Good job C-Webb!!!

5:48- This draft is reaching a record setting pace, we are past the 5 and a half hour mark. Go Draft!!!

5:49- And right on cue, ever Eagles fan in the joint boo’s!! They do not even know what they are booing anymore. The just boo, you know like Red Sox fans complain.

5:59- Checking in on the baseball scores, the good ole Yanks got spanked again by Texas at home. In other good news Jaret Wright went out with a shoulder injury. Also, Roger Clemens pitched 7 shutout innings today, but his team lost in 10 innings. His ERA this year is 0.32 and he won the Cy Young last year. Good thing we did not try and talk him out of retirement, I would have moved his kid’s entire school district to Long Island if that’s what it took.

6:01- The New England Patriots finished up the 1st Round with some guy I have never read anything on. Some guy named Logan something who was projected as a 3rd Round pick, but how can you question the Patriots. Well the official time was 5 hours and 47 minutes; I had 5 hours and 50 minutes. Whatever it was, it was really long, and that was only round

6:09- This was the first bit of “Jaws” breakdown film I have seen. Overall the ESPN Draft Coverage has not been good, just Boomer, Mel, and Mort sitting around. Not much of the player’s roundtable or studio analysis by Ron Jaworski and Merrill Hoge.

6:14- The Houston Rockets are up early on the Dallas Mavericks and the Second Round is on the way. Updates now coming when something cool actually happens, or a real good/bad pick by a team. Or if someone breaks into my apartment and sodomizes me with a garden hose.

6:51- Someone wake Ernie Acorsi, the Giants actually get to make a pick soon.

7:09- Bill Parcells take another linebacker. He is building that defense in his 3-4 image, with playmaking linebackers. The Giants are officially on the clock.

7:15- The Giants take cornerback Corey Webster. Again the Giants draft defensive back. They seem to do this a lot. I am not sure what was out there on the offensive side of the ball, but there were some defensive lineman that were available, but lord knows we need a few more defensive backs.

7:38- The New York Jets select Ohio State kicker Mike Nugent. What a great pick. This kid has a super strong leg, and he has made big kicks in bad weather, something he will have to do in East Rutherford. Jets fans did not boo, they were more stunned, they wanted CB/Returner Justin Miller. They will be happy with this pick, this kid is worth a second round pick.

8:30- Oh those tricky Jets. They knew the Vikings wanted Nugent and apparently nobody else wanted Justin Miller. So they waited 10 picks, and got Miller anyway.
9:10- Round two is over. Now only 5 more rounds to go.

10:00- The draft is starting to wain. The Celtics are dog stomping the Pacers right now. So much for Reggie’s swan song, time for Bruce Springsteen VH1 Storytellers!!

11:01- Day one is finally over, and Maurice Clarett is the last player chosen on day one, at the end of the 3rd Round, the 101st pick of the day. He was chosen by the Denver Broncos, who know a little something about running backs. Clarett did produce when he was on the field, but there are obvious issues that Denver has to deal with, but this guy has upside when you talk about him being on the Broncos.

Show Me the Trophy

The season has concluded and now it is time we hand out the hardware. This years Hart Trophy goes to………..oh whoops, those guys did not have a season this year. Yes for those not educated that was a hockey joke. Without further bad humor by me we will hand out this seasons NBA Awards.

COACH: George Karl of the Denver Nuggets. This to me is the biggest no brainer of the year. I do not care that he only coached 40 games; his record was 32-8. That is retarded, especially when you have Nene on your team. Nene!!! He was selected to be the coach of the team in the middle of the season, and made them the best team in the league. They were 25-4 after the All-Star break, losing only one home game and only to playoff teams (Phoenix & Houston). This guy deserves the award, hands down.

EXECUTIVE: Carroll Dawson of the Houston Rockets. First of all, when everyone knew that Tracey McGrady was going to be moved, he got him for a bag of dirty socks and a couple of jockstraps. He was unable to unload the useless play and contracts of Moochie Norris & Maurice Taylor (on the Knicks of course) and did a great job of adding spare parts around Yao and T-Mac. Added other starters Juwan Howard and David Wesley and veterans who can play multiple positions like Jon Barry and Bob Sura have made a huge improvement on that team. Without those key parts this team is nowhere near the playoffs in the competitive Western Conference.

SIXTH MAN: Earl Boykins of the Denver Nuggets is the quintessential sixth man. When his team needs it the most he comes off the bench and provides and immediate spark. He led his team in scoring 10 times this year and in assists 24 times, those are good numbers for a backup PG.

MOST IMPROVED: LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers continues to amaze and impress. Although his team did not make the playoffs his improvements have been staggering. How could he get much better than his rookie season? Points….Up by 7……Assists……up by 2……Rebounds….up by 2…..Shooting %......up by almost 7%.....3pt Percentage……up by 6%. This guy’s numbers went up at a staggering pace, and he will continue to get better. And for good measure he was 3rd in the league in steals (2.21)

MVP: I have decided on Co-MVP’s and of course not bound by everyone else’s ideas I have gone with Shawn Marion and Allen Iverson.

Yes Steve Nash deserves a world of credit for the Suns season, but Marion has been the steadying influence all season long. He finished the year 3rd in the league in rebounding (11.3 RPG), he plays small forward. He is the only guy under 6’10 amongst the rebounding leaders. While doing that he found time to be forth in the league in steals (Guards Larry Hughes, Allen Iverson, and LeBron James ahead of him). He was second in the league with 53 double/doubles. He was called on by Coach Mike D’Antoni to be the defensive stopper all year. He played the likes of Ray Allen to Kevin Garnett, LeBron James to Dirk Nowitzki. While being a rebounding machine and defensive stopper he still found time to drop 19 ppg. He is the glue to this team and is the most valuable player they have.

Allen Iverson still amazes me to this day. He plays all out all the time. This season he single handedly led his team to the playoffs. He finished the year leading the league in scoring (30.7 ppg) and fifth in the league in assists (7.9) and second in the league in steals (2.4). During his team’s playoff push in March and April he led the team in scoring and assists in 24 out of 27 games. Continually he would will this team to victory; he is a special player and was the best player in the league this year.

Long Awaited, AL Preview

(Ed. Note: This was completed last week, but I did not have time to post it with my vacation. Enjoy)

AL EAST

The Boston Red Sox are the champs and nobody can ever take that away from them. There line up was very solid last year, and they decided to add Edgar Renteria, one of the most clutch players in the game. They also added veteran Jay Payton to their outfield, and bolstered the depth of their pitching staff with David Wells, Matt Clement, and Wade Miller. Clement has started 30+ games 6 years in a row, and Wells 8 out of the last 10 years has started 30 games. They are solid all over the field, they have the winning edge, and most importantly they are no longer intimidated by anything, including the Yankees.

My beloved NY Yankees have a roster full of talent. They have had talent over the last 4 years, but never found the right mix of veterans and tough clutch players to win it all. Guys like Jorge Posada and Bernie Williams have proven to be less than clutch in the post season, as well as starter Mike Mussina. GM Brian Cahsman attempted to bolster the pitching staff by adding free agents Randy Johnson, Jaret Wright, and Carl Pavano. They also made one significant fielding change by paying Tony Womack (an awful batter & worse fielder) twice as much as they could have retained Miguel Cairo for, who was clutch for them all year. Again I feel this time just does not have the right mix to win it all, they certainly do have the talent. Matsui, Jeter, Sheffield and A-Rod all can be MVP candidates, maybe they can get together and lift this team to great heights?

The Baltimore Orioles are the AL version on the Cincinnati Reds. This team has all kinds of power through the line up. Sammy Sosa, Javy Lopez, Melvin Mora (most underrated hitter in the game) Rafael Palmeiro, and Miguel Tejada give them great punch. Plus Brian Roberts, Larry Bigbie and Luis Matos give them talented young players. Unfortunately their staff leaves little to be desired; Sidney Ponson, Bruce Chen, Erik Bedard, these are not exactly names you associate with winning, plus they play 36 combined games with the Yanks and Sox, just like every other team in this division.

The Toronto Blue Jays are always somebody’s sleeper pick each year, never mine though. This team does have some nice offensive talent. Everyone says Vernon Wells can be a superstar and Frank Catalanotto can flat out hit. Eric Hinske, Shea Hillenbrand, and Cory Koskie can all provide some pop, but again a weak staff will be their downfall. The staff is anchored by Roy Halladay (who has had 2 good years, and then a bunch of crappy ones peppered with arm trouble) and Ted Lilly. Lilly is a #4 starter, always will be, but the Jays need him to be more than that.

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays are loaded with potential. In fact it I think they can compete a little bit this year. Lou Pinella has brought a better attitude to that team, and they are now holding on to their talent. They have a great young outfield; Carl Crawford, Aubrey Huff, and Joey Gathright are all potential All-Stars. Also, 2B Jorge Cantu and C/DH Josh Phelps can be solid major leaguers. Huff, Phelps and 1B Travis Lee give them some serious pop and Carl Crawford gives them serious speed at the top. They have 2 dynamic young starters with Dewon Brazelton and Scott Kazmir, both of these guys have big league stuff and can be a good 1-2 duo in the years to come.

AL CENTRAL

The Cleveland Indians are ready to make another run. Just as they were built in the early 90’s they have been rebuilt in much the same mold. They used their draft for pitchers CC Sabathia & Jason Davis and All Star Catcher Victor Martinez. They used a great scouting system to find other players like starters Cliff Lee & Jake Westbrook and position players Ben Broussard, Coco Crisp, and Casey Blake. Then they signed veterans like Ronny Belliard, Aaron Boone, and Alex Cora. I love their line up from top to bottom and they have a deep pitching staff with a veteran bullpen and closer Bob Wickman. Manager Eric Wedge is the best young skippers in the game and is poised to lead this team to a division title.

The Minnesota Twins are built on their pitching staff. Johan Santana is for real, he is a superstar pitcher and the rest of their starters know their roles; Brad Radke, Joe Mays, and Kyle Loshe give them solid staff. In the bullpen that have solid relief with Juan Rincon, JC Romero, and Closer Joe Nathan. In the field they are solid and their line up is filled with solid professional hitters. If they get year long contributions from Joe Mauer & Justin Morneau they have a real chance to go to the playoffs. Ron Gardenhire is one of the best managers in baseball too, this team is for real.

Ozzie Guillen’s Chicago White Sox are looking to make a run at the division title this year. Their staff is anchored by ace Mark Buerhle who is off to a great start. However, the rest of their staff is filled with veterans with dead arms (Jose Contrares, Orlando Hernandez, and Freddy Garcia) and will fade by seasons end. They added veterans AJ Pierzynski, Jermaine Dye, and Scott Podsednik to their line up. They are also relying on Japanese veteran Tadahito Iguchi to provide some speed and power into their stagnant lime up. Unfortunately these movements are not really an “upgrade”, most o these guys were cast off for a reason. Guillen is going to have a tough time getting this team to compete all season long.

The Detroit Tigers are no longer the laughing stock they have been. The only problem I see is they may have too many parts. Over the last two seasons they have stacked up on veterans like Troy Percival, Magglio Ordonez, Kyle Farnsworth, Pudge Rodriguez, Carlos Guillen, and Rondell White. However, they are excited about youngsters Omar Infante, Marcus Thames, Nook Logan, Craig Monroe and Brandon Inge. There seems to be too many players and too few spot in the line up. Their pitching staff is a little week they are still waiting for Mike Maroth, Jeremy Bonderman, and Nate Robertson to round out into solid Major League starters.

The Kansas City Royals is where bad veterans go to die. Here is a list of some of their veteran starters: Joe McEwing, Terrence Long, Matt Stairs, Tony Graffanino, and Eli Marrero. Their staff consists of the 3 best #4 starters in the league, too bad Runelvys Hernandez, Brian Anderson, and Jose Lime are the 1-3 starters. Veteran Mike Sweeney is beginning to slide and he is due $11 million, so look for the Royals to move him when they are basically eliminated from the playoffs, which should come around Memorial Day. Also, manager Tony Pena may be on his way out, but the problems there are not really his fault.

AL WEST

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim somewhere near Long Beach and just down the road from Beverly Hills are back to their championship form from a few years ago. Manager Mike Sciosia has a line up filled with speed (Darrin Erstad, Jess DaVanon, & Chone Figgins), power (Vlad Guerrero, Garrett Anderson, & Steve Finley), and veteran hitters near the bottom of the line up (Orlandon Cabrera & Bengi Molina). There top 3 starters are very good and have championship experience with Jarrod Washburn, John Lackey and Bartolo Colon. They added veterans Paul Byrd as a starter and Esteban Yan in the pen. Angels mainstays Scott Shields & Brendan Donnelly anchor the pen as phenom Francisco Rodriguez (K-Rod) gets his chance to be a full time closer. They are the class of their division and should run away with it by seasons end.

The Texas Rangers line up is big time. They have All Star potential all over the field. I love their young infielders, Mark Texiera, Michael Young, Hank Blalock, and Alfonso Soriano. They can field pretty well and absolutely mash the ball, this is one of the best hitting infields ever. Veteran pitcher Kenny Rogers is still steady, youngster Chris Young & Ryan Drese are very good, and if Buck Showalter can get something out of veterans Pedro Astacio & Chan Ho Park this team can contend with the Angels.

The Seattle Mariners are ready to hit the ball all over the field, but can they get anyone out is the question. They went out in free agency wanting to fox their line up and they did that with the additions of Richie Sexson and Adrian Beltre. They still have veterans Bret Boone, Raul Ibanaez, and Ichiro Suzuki to help the newcomers push runs across the board, but the needed to address their lack of starting pitching. The rotation of Gil Meche, Joel Piniero, Aaron Sele, Ryan Franklin, and Jaime Moyer is one of the worst in baseball. They will not have enough to compete out west.

The Oakland A’s are not the same team that was winning division titles a few years ago. They have lost too many good players, but Billy “the genius” Bean thinks he can keep replacing All Stars with nobodies and win games. At the top of the staff they do have Rich Harden and Barry Zito which is solid, but the rest of the starters eave a lot to be desired. They added veteran catcher Jason Kendall to a line up that includes Eric Chavez and a bunch of role players. Guys like Mark Kotsay, Bobby Keilty, Marcus Scutaro, and Erubial Durazo. They have no real punch in their line up. The one thing they do have a is a phenom, reliever Huston Street can throw straight cheddar and is very fun to watch.

AL MVP: Hideki Matsui, LF New York Yankees
(Vlad Guerrero, RF Los Angeles Angels)

AL CY YOUNG: Johan Santana, Minnesota Twins
(Mark Buerhle, Chicago White Sox)

AL ROOKIE: Huston Street, RP Oakland A’s
(Marcus Thames, OF Detroit Tigers)

Classless

Sorry ladies and germs, I am slightly indisposed at the moment. I am at the MCI Heritage Golf Classic. Luckily there is a tent were I can access the internet for free.

Unortunately I did not see last nights incident live, I only heard about it on the radio this morning on my way to the beach. When I go home I flicked on SportsCenter to check out what took place. All I can say is typical classless Red Sox fans. Not much else can be said. This is not the first time they have attacked Yankee players. Last time I checked I do not remember Yankee fans attacking anyone on the Red Sox.

The Yankees as an organization have continualy shown class throughout all this nonsense with the Sawx over the last 2 seasons. In the pre season I seem to remember Red Sox players attacking the character and desire of Alex Rodriguez. How did the Yankees respond, well basically all of them said no comment (yes Randy Johnson responded that he was ready for a fight if the Red Sox started one). Then in the face of the biggest ring and banner ceremony to ever grace a baseball diamond (and I have no problem with them going all out) the Yankees, all of them, stood there on the steps of the dugout and continualy cheered for the World Champion Red Sox. Heck, even Mariano Rivera gave a bow when Sawx fans cheered him. If a Red Sox player had been in Rivera's position he probably would have flipped the crowd off.

One organization has class, and one doesn't. It is that simple.

We've got Controversy

I love sports controversies, they always get blown way out of proportion and they have the lifespan of the average fruit fly. We have been without a controversy for about 2 weeks, but just this week a few things have emerged.

Jersey Gate 2005

The great and talented and super team, Boston Red Sox, had their official World Series banner unveiling and ring ceremony yesterday. We will not dive into the ultra classy New York Yankees or the great Sawx fans or Boston sports legends Bill Russell, Bobby Orr, Johnny Pesky and Carl Yastremski, no instead we are forced to talk about Derek Lowe and Dave Roberts and their wardrobe. They both decided to don their World Series winning Red Sox home white uniform tops. Apparently John Kruk, Harold Reynolds and others seem to see this as some type of problem. This is the whole “baseball purist” bullshit that I absolutely hate. People get with the fucking times, it is 2005, most of these guys play for about 8 teams before they retire. Dave Roberts himself is on his fourth team in seven seasons and Lowe is on his third team in nine seasons. To me wearing the Jersey is no big deal. It is not disrespecting your current team; hell Lowe probably still doesn’t know the name of his backup second baseman on the Dodgers. The “purists” need to get over this. Times have changed; guys go from team to team every year. They have no loyalty, just as much as the clubs have no loyalty to them. It goes along with the “no fraternization” rule that old school baseball idiots subscribe to. These guys change teammates on a monthly basis, who gives fuck what jersey they were for their ring ceremony. As long as Lowe pitches his ass off every fifth day, that is all that matters. When guys get between the white lines they play their butts off for the team they are on, that is what counts.

T.O.

Every few months this guy becomes more and more of a horse’s ass. Some part of me really wants to like this guy because he performs, all the time, in big games and when he is hurt. He stepped up and played his butt off in the super bowl, but since then he has been acting a fool. He signed a huge deal with the Eagles and is the second highest paid receiver in the league and now wants to renegotiate. He got rid of his old agent and hired Drew Rosenhaus with the specific intent of trying to hold out and bleed the Eagles for more money. Hey jerk off your contract is fine, if you set some records over the next two years or actually win the whole thing for the Eagles then go ahead and try to restructure, but after one season, no dice pal. Then he decides he needs to air his side of the story and takes a huge shot at his team’s best player, fan favorite, and team leader. He was quoted as saying, “I wasn’t the one who got tired during the Super Bowl.” That is a low blow. He is trying to isolate himself from his teammates, for what reason I have no idea. Then he also said that his new agent and renegotiating his contract has nothing to do with monetary value. Here is a standing rule: When the say it’s not about the money, it is always about the money. He was also quoted as saying, “It's getting, in some ways, like it was for me in San Francisco.” He was of course talking about the media scrutinizing him at every turn. Well TO if the San Francisco people got on you, and now you moved to another team and their media and fans are getting on you, then maybe the problem is…….well………….uuhhhhh…………….YOU? Have you ever once considered that? This guy is just an idiot, plain and simple.

Racism in the NBA

Jermaine O’neal did not exactly say it correctly, but he is very close to being right. The policy hints at an underlying bigotry that exists with this policy. Yes I understand the way some black leaders look at the situation; they feel that if these young men are forced to go to school it is better for them in the long run, they can use basketball as a means to getting a better education. Rather than what is happening now, which is kids striving to play in the NBA and not pursue there education. However, for a lot of these young men a structured school setting is not the type of education in which they thrive. For some of them the chance to play professionally and gain financial independence can help lead them to a multitude of career opportunities despite some lack of formal education. White people simply don’t like watching young black kids making money in something they do well. O’neal has echoed the sentiment I have had for years. Mario Lemeuix, Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, never received their high school degrees and Derek Jeter, Tiger Woods, and Alex Rodriguez have yet to graduate from college. Nobody seems to be complaining that they should be required to attend a certain amount of schooling before they go professional. We feel the need to force education on these young men. Most of them don’t want to be in school anyway, why force them to do something they don’t want to do? O’neal is a very smart and sharp young man, again when someone like him makes what sounds like an outlandish comment like this, the media jumps all over him and wants to portray him as being stupid. One thing I have learned is when people do this, especially when it is about race, they don’t want the truth to be out there. If his comment were truly ridiculous it would have been uttered by Mike Tyson and parodied on Mad TV. The NBA is a racist league, run by a bunch of old white people, using young black people for their own financial gain. Huummmm, that sounds an awful lot like some other business in American history.

Senior Circuit Preview

NL EAST

The Atlanta Braves are still the class of this division. Bobby Cox knows how to manage and Leo Mazzone gets the most out of pitchers (see guys like John Thomson & Horatio Ramirez). Plus their GM John Schuerholz is great, remember 2 years ago when he cast off Kevin Milwood for some minor league catcher named Johnny Estrada? Well you will when Estrada is an All-Star this year. They have a solid starting staff anchored by a revived John Smoltz, newcomer Tim Hudson and Dan Kolb closing games. Defensively they are solid, but they do need more consistent offense from young Adam LaRoche and the corner outfield positions of Brian Jordan & Raul Mondesi. They are the class of the division for sure

The Florida Marlins are the fancy pick for everyone. I do think Miguel Cabrera will be an MVP candidate. But remember when they won the series 2 years ago they had career years by the Juan Pierre, Mike Lowell, and Juan Encarnacion’s of the world. I have never been a fan of Carlos Delgado, he never plays well in important spots and their rotation still has a ton of question marks. If all their pitchers pitch to their potential they could be very good; but are you really going to trust the tender arm of AJ Burnett, the tender ego of Guillermo Mota, and the age & stuff of veterans Al Leiter and Ismael Valdez? I for one am not. They are a second to third place team.

The New York Metropolitans have certainly improved their club, but the still have a great deal of question marks. First in the dugout, Willie Randolph is in his first year as a manager and the pressure cooker of New York is one he is familiar with, but it is whole new ballgame when you have to answer the questions everyday. The bullpen is a disaster and with their aging pitching staff they need a better than average pen. Defensively they are pretty solid, but I am not enamored with their outfield depth and while David Wright has all the makings of being a great player, he has to perform with all the pressure on his shoulders.

The Philadelphia Phillies are the epitome of mediocre. They have a cast off as a manager and a list of cast offs up and down their roster. Their pitching staff is peppered with journey men like Cory Lidle, Terry Adams, Rheal Cormier, Jon Leiber, Aaron Fultz, and Tim Worrell. Bobby Abreu, Mike Leiberthal, and Vincente Padilla who all seemed to be the cornerstone of a Phillies title run are on the downside of their careers. It seems none of these guys became the superstars some thought they might. Jim Thome has yet to hit .300 in the senior circuit, and they round out the lineup with other ageing vets Kenny Lofton & David Bell. Pat Burrell seems to breaking through this season, but not nearly enough to carry this team.

Again the Washington Nationals are a team filled with castaways. It is good to see baseball (or Frank Robinson’s team version of baseball) in the nation’s capital again. However, the novelty will soon wear off after watching Cristina Guzman strikeout and former All Star Jose Vidro struggle to field the baseball. The only reason to watch this team is to see the development of Brad Wilkerson. I cannot even mention their pitching staff because typing some of the names will cause me to pass out.

NL CENTRAL

Tony LaRussa’s St Louis Cardinals are once again on track to win the NL central. They bolstered their pitching staff by adding Mark Mulder; a super left hander in a new league should be very effective at the top of the rotation. The staff is by7 no means great, but Dave Duncan always gets solid performances out of veterans like Chris Carpenter, Jeff Suppan and Matt Morris as starters, and in the pen the added Bill Pulsipher along with returnees Ray King and Jason Isringhausen. They lost their middle infielders and catcher, but replaced them with veterans David Eckstein, Mark Grudzielanek and behind the plate vet Einer Diaz and up and comer Yadier Molina (who’s 2 brothers are both major league catchers.) Their line up is still very potent and they have a great veteran presence off the bench, LaRussa will again lead this team to a central crown.

I think the Houston Astros could surprise people this year. Everyone thought they were loaded last year, but I think this year’s team has less pressure on it. They have the best 3 man rotation in baseball when healthy with Oswalt, Pettitte, and the Rocket. Brad Lidge appears to be a front line closer for years to come. In the field they have great player, with mainstays Biggio, Bagwell, Berkman, plus a good core of young players; SS Adam Everett, OF’s Willy Tavares, and Chris Burke. They also have quality vets coming off the bench. I like this teams make up a lot.

Everyone loves the Chicago Cubs, except me. They have a solid top 3 starters, sans the inevitable arm trouble, but I don’t like the rest of their staff. I just do not trust guys like Joe Borowski, LaTroy Hawkins, and Glendon Rusch et al. Their line up is not nearly as potent as it had been with the likes of Sammy Sosa and Moises Alou. I thin Nomar Garciaparra will have a big year, but can you win with bums like Jeromy Burnitz, Jerry Hairston jr, and Todd Hollandsworthless as the core of your team? The loveable losing Cubbies will be back to their old ways this year.

The Cincinnati Reds have a great line up. I have no idea who can pitch for them, or even the name of there managers, but boy they are fun to watch at the plate. They can rival any line up in baseball, hitters 2-7 look like this; Ken Griffey jr, Sean Casey, Austin Kearns, Adam Dunn, Joe Randa, and Rich Aurilia. That is what we call potent, however their pitching leaves a lot to be desired. A staff of Eric Milton, Paul Wilson, Aaron Harang, and Ramon Ortiz just does not frighten me at all. They will battle the Cubs for third place all year long.

The Milwaukee Brewers are not very good. They are looking toward the future, and it could be pretty bright. They are still reaping the benefits of the Richie Sexson trade with starters Junior Spivey, Damian Miller, and Lyle Overbay. The added a big bat in their line up with Carlos Lee. I cannot wait until their young players begin to round into shape, SS JJ Hardy is already with the club and they have Prince Fielder (Cecil’s son) and Rickie Weeks waiting in the minors. Unfortunately the have only one arm on the whole staff, Ben Sheets, and boy is he fun to watch, he is a Cy Young Caliber pitcher.

It is a shame that the people of Pittsburgh have to watch a team as poor as the Pittsburgh Pirates. They have a few talented players, but have absolutely no depth. There #1 starter is little known Oliver Perez, a 23 yr old fireballing lefty who had a 2.99 ERA last year. They also have three talented players in the filed; power hitting outfielder Jason Bay, slick fielding SS Jack Wilson, and 1B Craig Wilson. All of these players will most likely be dealt along with veteran outfielder Matt Lawton. They are a last place team all the way.

NL WEST

I love picking the San Diego Padres every few years. This team was built from the ground up through their minor league system. They have a solid staff with a good mix of veterans like Tim Redding & Woody Williams and youngsters Adam Eaton, Jake Peavy and Brian Lawrence. Peavy is one of the best young arms in the game, leading the NL in ERA last season. There line up is strong from top to bottom. Mark Loretta & Khalil Greene up the middle are excellent defensively. They have power in the line up with veterans Phil Nevin, Ryan Klesko, and emerging star Sean Burroughs. Bruce Bochy knows how to win, and has just the team to do it in the undermanned NL West.

The San Francisco Giants are a very good ball club. There only problem is there age, the average over 32 years of age. This is also their strength. Defensively they are a very good team, Omar Vizquel, Ray Durham, Edgardo Alfonzo, and JT Snow around the horn can still all pick it. Until they get Bonds and Alou back from the DL they will rely on a veteran staff anchored by Jason Schmidt and book ended with Armondo Benitez and their defense which also sports Gold Glover Mike Matheny behind the plate. Manager Felipe Alou will keep this team in contention till his sluggers get back, and maybe GM Brian Sabian can add another arm before the trade deadline.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are a team that looks like it was thrown together by someone who does not really know what they are doing. It consists of over paid pitchers; Odalis Perez ($4.5), Darren Dreifort ($11.4), Derek Lowe ($7), and Brady Penny ($5.1) and some decent position players at best. JD Drew and Jeff Kent are the 2 best guys in the line up, but they lack an overall punch offensively. Defensively they leave a lot to be desired too, outside of Milton Bradley and Cesar Izturis. Overall they have no real team concept, except spending a lot of money, they are the New York Knicks of baseball, just spend a lot of money every year and hope.

I like what the Arizona Diamondbacks have done to retool their team. The got rid of Randy Johnson but were able to get 2 starters back for him, Brad Halsey & Javier Vazquez. Also adding veterans Russ Ortiz & Shawn Estes to go with Brandon Webb improves there starting staff 1-5. Also, adding 3B Troy Glaus and OF Jose Cruz jr. helps that line up tremendously. The give some much needed pop to what was a very weak line up last season. They have solid veterans Luis Gonzalez, Shawn Green and Craig Counsell to help round out their lineup. This team could make some noise in the weak and whacky NL West.

The Colorado Rockies are perhaps the worst team in all of baseball. No matter what this team does they will never be able to win in Colorado. Their pitchers have absolutely no chance to survive 81 home games. Their closer Shawn Chacon last year saved 35 games, but had a 7.11 ERA, that is ridiculous. They have an average age of only 26 years old, a slew of rookies and journeyman fill out their line up card, with one exception. Todd Helton is one of the best and most forgotten players in the game, he is wasting away in Colorado, and I think you may see him push for a trade this year.

NL MVP: Chipper Jones, 3B Atlanta Braves
(Nomar Garciaparra, SS Chicago Cubs)

NL CY YOUNG: Jason Schmidt, RHP San Francisco Giants
(John Smoltz, RHP Atlanta Braves)

NL ROOKIE: Chris Burke, RF Houston Astros
(JJ Hardy, SS Milwaukee Brewers)

The Weekend Wrap

I told you people I was back in the swing of things. Be sure to check in all week, the updates will be coming fast and furious. The Baseball preview edition is coming on Tuesday and at least another update before I leave for vacation on Thursday afternoon, to the beautiful Hilton Head Island and the Heritage Golf Tournament at Harbor Town.

Things we learned:

- Riddick Bowe is still alive, and apparently making a comeback. He had a fight on national television Friday evening against some other washed up bum. Bowe had to weigh at least 350 lbs. He was spectacularly fat, I loved it. He also had more tattoo’s of people’s faces than Madonna’s had sex partners.

- The Mets suck. I know Martin will get all over me for saying this early in the season, but really, 1-5? It is just like the Metropolitans to spend a bunch of money and still suck. Their fans must be going loony up in NY. They will get things straightened out, but it is still fun to see them suffer.

- Four of the NBA’s top players may very well not be appearing in this years NBA Postseason. That tells me for as much as an individual game Pro Basketball is, you still need teammates to help you win. So all the haters of the NBA game are wrong, it is still a team game. All of these guys are in somewhat different situations; Kevin Garnett’s teammates just plain suck this year, Kobe Bryant ran his good teammates off, LeBron James GM is retarded and decided to fire a coach who had them in the playoffs for a coach who couldn’t win a CYO League title, and Allen Iverson’s GM traded for the biggest waste in the history of basketball. (Check the archives of this site; I believe I remarked that the Webber trade sucked, I am always right, sometimes).

Things I liked:

- The baseball season has started and there is so much excitement. Again as predicted by yours truly, that once the games started and even with a steroid suspension, nobody fucking cares. The weather is beautiful and fans are turning out to watch young take the diamond in America’s favorite past time. Excitement is high all over the league; The Indians are improved, the Tigers arte no longer a joke, the D-Backs are looking much better, the D-Rays……ok well they still suck.

- My DSL Line finally getting fixed. It has been on the fritz for about 10 days, that and work have hindered my progress on the website. Time Warner Cable was able to get a serviceman out here within 8 days of my telephone call, what a great return on investment.

- The whole opening week of Baseball. What a great week, so many good plays and exciting games. I can’t wait for the rest of the season, baseball rocks more than any other sport.

Things I disliked:

- I was at a swinging college shin dig this weekend, and I was officially that creepy old guy in the corner. I had always hovered around being that guy, but Saturday night was truly remarkable. I could see people pointing and talking about me, you know “Wow, who is the old guy over there, what is he doing here?” This party consisted mostly on under aged women, which was spectacular, but I could tell the crowd was creeped out by my presence, so of course I stayed till the very end.

- Coverage of the Masters Golf tournament disturbed me. I understand there was a ton of delays with the rain and all. But CBS has exclusive rights over this thing. Saturday morning I had to watch constant updates on the computer and golf channel, because CBS’s coverage was not starting until 3:30. Well when their coverage did kick in and we were waiting for the leaders to tee off around 5:15 you figured they could have showed me action from earlier in the day, but no I needed to watch Dick Enberg essays, god those things are dreadful. I had to hear Jim Nantz describe how his boyfriend Fred Couples back was in such pain he should not even be playing. Sunday CBS could certainly have brought there coverage on earlier. Nobody was allowed to show highlights of the third round finish which happened in the morning and had Tiger Woods move ahead of Chris DiMarco, the most dramatic part of the tournament.

- Two more quickies about The Masters, and all golf tournaments on TV. Golf announcers are always wrong, always. They could honestly have anyone announce golf and guess what this putt is going to do, or whether or not this guy can make this shot. Can Jim Nantz stop whispering? He is inside a building watching the play on monitors, why the fuck when a guy is putting on the 6th green does he have to whisper?

My Absence

Rumors of my death were greatly exaggerated. The news reported Friday that the Pope had died, not some rambling fat man from South Carolina. I totally understand how people could get that confused. My delay in posting was obviously caused by the enormous amount of work that went into the Gamecocks winning the National Invitational Tournament. It included, as most of you know, an all expense paid trip to the city so nice they named it twice. The trip was good, everyone had fun and now I am back and certainly better than ever, refreshed and with a lot of things on my mind.

- The death of Pope John Paul II was a very sad day all across the world. The man was one of the 5 most important figures in the 20th century. To watch all the pageantry following his death is simply amazing, I cannot wait to watch the funeral Friday morning.

- Baseball has begun. Yeah yeah, Alex Sanchez got suspended for steroids but nobody really cares. Here is what matters: Jeter jacked a walk off against the Sawx, Pedro struck out 12, Beltran homered in his debut, the Indians have the most underrated staff in baseball, the Brewers still suck, and free agent acquisitions all over the league are making an immediate contribution. More to come on baseball in my preview issue coming later this week.

- The NCAA Tournament concluded in fabulous fashion. I of course was horribly wrong in my predictions, but what else is new. It was a very good tournament, but don’t let the pundits convince you this was the best championship ever. They say that every year. Now comes the fun part, the coaching changes and the ridiculous idiots declaring for the NBA draft. Three words for you, Pops Mensa Bosu.

- Golf is heating up especially this week as we get things cooking with The Masters. I am poised to watch every second of coverage this week. My boy Mickelson is getting his game cranked up, Tiger’s swing looks good, the Big E is coasting and Vijay is feverishly working on his game. Man I am so excited for this tournament. Then the next week I will personally be attending the Heritage Classic at Harbor Town in Hilton Head South Carolina. I could so use a vacation too!!

- Internet porn is better than ever. Can’t complain there!!

- The Great, and I do mean Great, Mitch Hedberg passed away on March 30. I know most of you have no clue who he is, but I assure he was a stand up comedy genius. Yes Martin, it is 100% true. He died of heart failure, and drugs were reported to be no factor in his death. He suffered from the same heart condition that brought his mother to an early death as well. He will be missed by everyone who enjoyed his humor. RIP Mitch.

- I was looking back on things over the past year and remembering all the fun we have had with this little website. How could we forget that pancake fight we had here in the office. Or remember the Tsunami, and how much I hated it. Then there was the website Christmas party, when Ted showed up with the Goat as his date. And remember what the stripper did with the goat? Wow, she was talented. I cannot wait for the big One Year Anniversary Bash to be held in a few weeks. Hopefully we can keep things going for at least another year. Or at least until the government figures me out. Oh boy, I’ve said too much.

Peace & Love,

KD
