Just another case of that old BCS

What is wrong with the BCS? I guess it what I am asking is why do people demand so much from a system that is set up faulty in the first place? We know the college football system is a little askew, but that is part of its charm. That is why every Saturday afternoon is so special, because every game does indeed means something. I like the system that is in place, really if you feel like you are National Champions just go ahead and proclaim yourself that, other teams have done it before.

Exactly how many real problems have we had with the BCS? Mostly we sit here all season and dream up scenarios that would throw the BCS system out of whack and then we could all riot in the streets like this is a Serbian Basketball game. But really since 1998 when the BCS started we had two seasons where there was some controversy. In ’98 Tennessee played FSU and there were no problems, same can be said for years 1999-2002, where the clear #1 and #2 teams squared off against one another and we had a clear National Champion. In 2003 we had a little bit of controversy when the Associated Press decided to name Southern Cal it’s National Champion refuting LSU’s victory in the Sugar Bowl over #2 Oklahoma. Of course this was part of the AP agenda because they were not as involved in deciding the champion as they had been in the past, the BCS system had limited their power. The next year Southern Cal and Oklahoma were 1-2 all season long, but Auburn through a wrench into the BCS plans when they went undefeated, but really nobody remembers that, we all just praise USC and how great they were, so the controversy is basically a mute point over a year or so later,

Now all you ass pirates who read this are going to clammer for a playoff system, to you I say suck on it. Nobody really wants a playoff, they want the ideal of a playoff. Really do you need another 4-5 weeks added on to the season? I certainly don’t, isn’t there enough football out there, this would be just something else I have to try and pay attention too. Instead, I get a break for a little while and then get to rejoin it later on, you know once the Holidays are over with. I love people who also talk about how much money it would make. These school Presidents and AD’s are bottom line people, they want as Randy Moss so eloquently put it once “Straight Cash, Homey.” They are make super billions off the television rights to this BCS people, it would be almost impossible to make more money, especially when you think of the logistics of moving teams around for a 2 or 3 or 4 week period, rather than a one time 4 day trip to a bowl game. They make plenty of money now in the current system so why make a change.

Lastly, on the plus side I think they have put together some damn good games, and I am excited about watching them.

Boise State vs. Oklahoma- This has a chance to be a great game. Boise brings in one of the best ground attacks in the country and Ian Johnson the best RB nobody has ever heard of who only averages 158 yards per game (Plus he is from San Dimas). The Sooner defense will have their hands full with the rushing attack of Boise.

USC vs. Michigan- Seriously is there anyone out there that is disappointed that we only get to see USC and Michigan in the Rose Bowl. What a game this promises to be, the high octane Wolverine offense matching up against the stout Trojan defense; a role reversal when you think about conference traditions.

LSU vs. Notre Dame- The Catholics and the Cajuns, I suppose this game is not what anyone wants to see. You probably cannot get a hotel room within 150 miles of New Orleans already. This game has maybe the most talent in the entire country assembled on one field. We will truly get to judge the coaching merit of both Les Myles and Charlie Weis on this contest.

And of course the National Championship game matches two traditional powers. Ohio State always a title contender against the new look Gators, not led by the evil genius, but rather by an outside who hasn’t made many friends, but he has won game and in his second season is in the title game. Meyer ha a chance to establish this Florida program as his own, and Jim Tressel is looking to add to his impressive resume of National Titles (4 at Youngstown and 1 at OSU).

Also lets us not forget some other memorable games the BCS formula has brought us, and this is non championship games. I am sure some of you will remember some of these games and how great they were.

1998- Wisconsin vs. UCLA played good ole fashioned slober knocker in the Rose Bowl with the Badgers eventually winning 38-31.

1999- Michigan vs. Alabama squared off in the Orange Bowl, something in thought of before the BCS, and the game did not disappoint going into over time where the Wolverines edged out a 1 point victory

2000- Oregon State vs. Notre Dame was one for all the Irish haters around the world, including myself. Nobody thought the Beavers deserved to be an at large team and that they didn’t belong in the same state as the Irish, and all they did was run up a 41-9 butt whooping on ND.

2001- LSU vs. Illinois turned into a shootout at the Sugar Bowl. The Cajun crowd helped lift SEC perennial power LSU over Big 10 upstart Illinois

2002- The title game was enough for me, Ohio State vs. Miami.

2003- Miami vs. Florida State a rematch from earlier in the season when the Hurricanes took apart the Seminoles offense on their home field. The rematch in Miami was a good as promised with the Canes edging out another win.

2004- Texas vs. Michigan again funky Rose Bowl match-up that proved to be a classic. Texas and Michigan slugged it out back and forth until Texas kicked a game winner as time expired.

2005- West Virginia vs. Georgia was played in Atlanta even though it was the Sugar Bowl. The Mountaineers raced out to a big lead before thwarting back a late rally by the Dawgs.

On Wisconsin

I have just recently touched down from three exotic days int he land of cheese and people who talk funny.....Wisconsin.

As most of you know I was up there watching the Packers get absolutely manhandled by the Jets, almost as badly as I got manhandled by American Airlines. Speaking of which for the second time in 4 days due to the crack staff their at American I am sans my luggage.

But alas, this is just a tease, like a teenage hooker. I haven't the time or sense to write the blog that this spectacular weekend deserves, hopefully I will have it done by weeks end.

Enjoy...............................and if anyone is going to be in the Charlotte Airport today, maybe you can check on my luggage.
