The Super Bore

As predicted the Steelers won the game, mostly in a comfortable fashion. And as expected the game, the hype, the concerts and everything about the game in general was an unmitigated disastrous bore. I don’t know what it is but the Super Bowl holds no intrinsic excitement or value to me. The playoffs leading up to the game are great, and then the game just plain blows. I know we are all sick of all the shit that surrounds the game, especially those of us who actually like football, the sport not the entertainment venue.

Last year I had many of these same views and by most of the readers I was ripped apart for having them. But again I don’t care; I want to watch a football game, preferably a good one void of errors and mistakes and played by the premier players in the game. What do I get? I get a bunch of washed up entertainers sharing the national anthem, after a washed up blind guy played a pre game concert. Pre game concert? Are you kidding me, I hate to sound like Chuck Bednarik, but when the fuck did a football game need a pre game concert. Only to be outdone by all these washed up clowns the NFL trotted out the fucking Rolling Stones for halftime. This halftime show was so bad and out dated that before “Satisfaction” Mick Jagger stated, “We could have played this before the first Super Bowl.” What does that tell you? Nobody gives a shit about the Stones, not even old people who used to like the Stones.

Now to the actual football game, a bigger bore than all the fake entertainment. I thought this game had a little potential to be a good game. Although the national “buzz” about it was awful. Really the Seattle Seahawks just don’t move the meter. Yes I know they have the MVP of the league, but most people have never even heard of Shaun Alexander. Come to think of it, after the Super Bowl even less people have heard of him, I am not sure if he ever made it to the game. He had the quietest 95 yards in a Super Bowl. It was a fairly uninspired performance by the league MVP.

The Seahawks had this game in their hands. They were and probably still are the better football team. However, every time they had a chance to do something they bit themselves in the ass. And no I do not want to hear anything about the officials, Darrell Jackson pushed off. He gained an advantage through the use of illegal contact that is textbook pass interference. Then after that the Hawks still had a 1st down and they promptly lost 4 yards on the ensuing three plays and had to settle for a field goal. After one quarter they severely outplayed the Steelers (who had 0 first downs and 3 three and outs) but negated two drives with penalties and only led 3-0. You cannot give a team as good as the Steelers opportunities like that. In the second quarter they had a typical Steelers11 play 6 minute drive capped off by a Ben Roethlisberger TD (and yes look at the replay part of the ball crosses the goal line). Then came the Seahawks total abomination; their 2 minute drill. This was an absolute freaking joke, it was like watching 11 guys and 1 coach who have never been together try and operate a two minute drive.

The second half was more of this poor brand of football. In the second half the Steelers finally played on offense as I suspected, mixing up the running game with Bettis, Parker and an end around. Then they threw in the old reverse pass which was the signature play of the game and won Hines Ward the MVP. The Steelers controlled the second half and the Seahawks just burned too many opportunities, and look no further than Jeramy Stephens who thrice dropped 3rd down passes that would have kept drives alive. The Seahawks were their own worst enemies in Super Bowl XL and that is why they did not win.

been a long time, no talk. first of all, i hate the steelers mainly because they are good at what they do and somewhat because i think they just set my franchise back another 15 years in the first round of the playoffs...but it's football!!!! which brings me to my point about the game...please let there be an important game that's not f'd up by dumb coaches. i'm pretty sure mack brown has made some good calls on recruiting and brought a great team together, but dammit vince young made plays in that championship game and pete carroll made either gutsy or stupid calls that thwarted a great effort by USC. much like the super bowl- hines ward, randal el and big ben made plays and holgrem put seattle in positions to lose. aaaaaaaaaah, much like his protege andy reid in last years super bowl. three instances- 4th and inches on the 35 or 30 or something and holgrem punts. the two minute drill at the end of the half and down 11 at the 50 yard line with 6 mins left and a 4 and 7 or so and holgrem punts again.....blas, i wish you coulda been there, i called the damn randel el reverse pass (cuz they did the same shit to break the bengals' backs in the same part of the game) and i knew pitt would knock the last 6 mins off the game if holgrem punted---THAT'S the steelers, we'll do just enough to score a TD, just enough to stop you from getting any big plays and just enough to put the last nail in the coffin...in other words, just enough to WIN. that's why i hate 'em.

That should have never been called. No one gained an advantage. They were standing still and the ball was thrown away from them. How they missed Seattle's TD near the end of the half is also mind-boggling. The WR caught the ball, drug his left foot and his right foot hit the pylon, which is IN PLAY. They didn't even review it. The Seahawks did commit some dumb penalties and had chances to win, but this should force the NFL to review their officiating crews. And Big Ben DIDN'T MAKE ANY PLAYS. Willie Parker and Hines Ward are the reasons they won the game. Ben threw TWO picks. Niether pass would have been acceptible for a ninth grader to throw. I will agree 100% with Kris. Give me a fucking championship football game, I don't need anything else, xcept maybe bring back BudBowl.

Seattle doesn't move the meter??? Actually this game was the 2nd highest rated show in the history of TV. Trailing only the final episode of MASH.

More importantly the entire world got to watch the refs rip the Hawks a new one and serve the Lombardi Trophy to the Steelers on a silver platter. Worst officiated game I have ever seen and I had no interest on the outcome.

That being said, I'm glad Cower got the win. he's a great coach and deserves it. Also Gentle Ben showed his true colors. He blows!

Yeah I have read the ratings reports, and I truly believe they are bogus. The NFL is a powerful entity and they can make the numbers show what they want you to believe. Perception is reality.

Now to the officiating. Were bad calls made, certainly. They are in every game. Listening to people complain about the outcome of games being determined by officials is tired. Players determine the outcome of the games, it is that simple. The Steelers players got it done, including Ben Roethlisberger.

First of all Roehtlisberger wins games, that is what they pay QB's for, and right now he does it better than anyone, and yes including Brady. During the Super Bowl Roethlisberger made sveral plays, including the key block for Randel El to get the pass off to Ward, and the scrabble to free himself then not going over the line of scrimmage and completing a pass 30 yards downfield. On third downs in the game Roethlisberger was 5 of 9 on converting passes and 4 times he ran the ball; twice he got a first down and once he scored a Touchdown. I would call that making plays.

Roethlisberger was responsible for ONE Steeler score. Take away Randal El, Ward, and Parker, and the Seahawks win 10-7. I get so tired of QB's are the best, they win games. NO. He tried to give the game away, and three of his teammates said, well Ben aint doin shit, guess it's up to us. Get off of his dick people. The Steelers have a great defense and some unbelievable athletes on offense. Put Ben on the Seahawks, they lose. Put him on the Redskins, they lose. Same with Tom Brady. He plays with a bunch of great players. See what happened when all the Patriots were hurt. Not even the great Tom Brady could do it by himself. And the opposite is also the same. Put Carson Palmer, Drew Brees, or Eli Manning on the Steelers, they win! Big Ben owes blow jobs to Ward, Randal El, and Parker.
