Fear the Water & the Devil
It is that time again folks, Movie review time. This weekend, in between murdering all the people who I work with, I made it to the theatre to see Open Water and Exorcist: The Beginning.
Open Water was a terrific movie. This will certainly be underappreciated by audience's all across the country. The movie is very subtle, and you definately have to pay attention closely to the dialouge. When the 2 divers get stranded in the water they go through a cycle of emotions that is amazing, feelings of why did this happen, to paranoia about sharks, to anger at each other over whose fault it is that they went on this vacation, to fear of being stranded forever and a multitude of others. The dialogue between the actors is very real, there is not a great deal of poeticness or preachiness about anything in there dialogue. The movie was shot with video cameras which gives it a grittiness and a realism to it, the music in the movie was excellent, and as an added bonus the actress in it, Blanchard Ryan, fairly new to the big screen is hot and has great new york boobs. The end of the movie is very plausible, not over done or overstated with violence or gore which is so refreshing. As the movie came to a close the theatre was silent, then the credits began to role and the scene they so with the credits is very powerful. When the credits ended everyone in the theatre just got up and slowly walked out without making a sound, it was a very powerful emotion to experience.
Next I saw the new Exorcist movie. This unfortunately was not so good. It had some very disturbing imagery and nasty violence in it. It explains Father Merrin's first encounter with the Devil and his possesion of human soles. The concept of the movie is very engaging, and ancient church is found on the grounds where it is believed that Lucifer fell from heaven. Sometimes the movie is very over the top with it violence and attempts to scare you. The acting is okay and there is nothing else oustanding about the movie making, there is some CGI effects and basic filmmaking. You would definately have to be a fan of the first movie in order to even understand this one, and have to understand Roman Catholicism and their belief in possseions and all that stuff. Overall I would not recommend this one to go see in the theatre, sometime if you are at the video store and you cannot thin of whcih Jet Li or Vin Diesel movie to rent, you would be better served by seeing this one.
