The Daily Nooner
- This is an issue we took awhile to discuss here and that is the recent comments made by Air Force Head Coach Fisher DeBerry. Coach DeBerry made some sensitive remarks when talking about the difference of speed and athleticism when it comes to black athletes (I do not use PC terms like African-American, since most em was born in Brooklyn and not Africa anyway). But I can say stuff like that, mainly because nobody gives a crap what I think, but more importantly I am not in a position of leadership amongst a community of young men and woman. See, Fisher DeBerry is a community leader and influential person in the lives of young people. When you are in a position like that you can be two beers and a shot of whiskey away from saying, “Boy them niggers are quick!” And in his situation he can’t really be saying the things he said. I am not saying he should be fired, but maybe the Academy should review his status after the season. Unfortunately it is the times we live in now
- Oh wow, just when you think you can’t here an athletes name again, the most famous choke artist in the history of sports Jean Van de Velde is making headlines again. This time Van de Velde intends to qualify to participate in the British Open next year, that is the Women’s British Open. Now that will make all the macho testosterone filled idiots who think that Michelle Wie and Annika Sorenstam shouldn’t be allowed to compete on PGA Tour events. Me, I could care less whether or not they let the woman compete, but I know that letting them compete with the men can put more money in peoples pockets. Letting Van de Velde copmpete with woman isn’t going to do a damned thing, and it still won’t make me watch woman’s golf. But watching Wie and Sorenstam compete with men has made me watch tournaments that I was not otherwise interested in, and that is the whole point. I say good luck Jeanny, good luck, I hope he does qualify and then misses the cut; that would rule.
- Well the numbers are in, and it is official. The 2005 World Series is the worst rated series ever. Though each of the first 2 games was the highest rated fox prime time show of the week, but that doesn’t mean much. The ratings were down 30% from last season. IT is unfortunate because I do think they were the two most deserving teams, and the White Sox were fun to watch. I do know one guy who was watching……………
- That guy that was watching was the great Bobby Valentine. Valentine has made it public, he believes his Japanese Major League Championship team, the Chiba Lotte Mariners, could beat the White Sox in a true World Series. I love Bobby V, I mean he doesn’t truly think they can beat the White Sox, but he sure knows how to stir things up a bit. He is just trying to get MLB to consider the idea, of a “true” World Series. And with the Baseball Cup coming up this spring he is just trying to get some more people to try and watch. I wish Bobby V would come back to the states and either manage or commentate, because I like having him around, even if you hate him he is fun!!
AND
- I read the craziest and in a twisted was a very sick/funny story yesterday online. Apparently in Delaware yesterday some lady went outside and yanked a rope over a branch and hung herself outside of her house. But this being the Halloween season, people who passed by thought nothing of a body swinging from a tree. That’s right folks they thought it was a Halloween prop. For most of the afternoon the suicide went unreported as cars casually drove by and saw this lady swinging from the tree. I just thought I would enlighten people with that story, fucking Delawareians!!

OK, I knew this was going to be a major news story the second Coach DeBerry made those statements and still contend he did nothing wrong. The coach did not slight anyone with his comments. he wasn't racist, insensitive or incorrect. There is not 1 white half back in the NFL, or at least nit 1 that actually contributes to the league. In fact I don't think there's been one quality white half back since John Riggins. (Note- Mike Alstott is a full back). It is true that there are fast white men, he even says this, but it is a fact that every starting NFL half back is white. So what is wrong with him saying he wants to recruit more black athletes on his team, which is primarily a run first football team?? He didn't use disparaging names and didn't insult anyone. Here's a white coach that wants more minorites on his team...hello... aren't we usually crusifying these guys. I mean does the media want it both ways?
I understand what Kris is saying that his words are on the line of potentially crossing over into the racial area, but they aren't. Anybody is 3 shots of Yukon away from saying something stupid and insensitive. Let's not hang this guy because he's a white football coach that enjoys the talents of black athletes. He's a great coach, a good man, and a terrific role model for young men. The government should be proud to have him on the payrole and should not take action until he actually does something wrong!!
Slipps, one other thing, why do you suppose the World Series was the lowest rated ever??
The reason why DeBerry's comments are wrong is because a preacher back in the days heard something that he didn't agree with on the radio and the FCC was born. Their censorship and the creation of Carlin's "7 Dirty Words" has continued into the pussification of American society today.
The mothers have won the battle, the war over our 'potty mouths' and Jeremy Piven was right in PCU. Everyone has a beef and can find something to be pissed off about and motivate enough people that vote on subject matters that bore the rest of us to force the rest of us to commit their ways.
I'm a first-generation American, but I'm American before I'm anything else. Not African American or Hispanic American, which I could claim since each of my parents were actually born in those countries and I've actually left this country and been to a spanish speaking nation not named Mexico and an African area not influenced by X-Clan or Africa Bambata...
The pussies have won and we'll all just have to bite our tounge or speak softly behind the currents that everyone else uses.
Granted, if we moved the figurative currents, there would be huge race riots because too many people are concerned with the 1 percent that makes each of us different than the 98 percent that we all have, but I'll get off my soap box now and leave y'all with this...
"Getting with you is a top priority. Ain't no need to question the authority"
Danny,
I did a bad job of clarifying what I meant. DeBerry's comments were wrong, but not in a wholly evil or malicious sort of way. But he did not need to introduce race into the topic he was speaking about. He simply could have said, "they had much bette athletes than we did." "I wish we had kids with that speed and athleticism then we would be able to compete better." Introducing race into what he said makes him assume that his audience has a similar stereotype about a race of people. Again is was not maliciously wrong to say what he did, but it was wrong.
Why can't I just say something like, the other day a guy broke into my house, and cleaned out all of my electronics equipment; and then say the police caught him and I now know he was Armenian. I could still tell you the story without saying he is Armenian into, the mans origin is irrelevant, he is a criminal.
Fisher DeBerry would most likely tell that same story this way, "This Armenian guy broke into my house and cleaned out all of my electronics equipment." Where the man is from is not a pertinant detail in the story, unless the core audience who you are telling this too has some of the same biases or stereotypes that you have.
I see what you're saying. Being blind to color is one thing, and leaving it out of the context is another. He should have said it the way you said, without the use of the color of the athletes skin, but he was making the point directly to the athleticism of the black athletes. He knows, as we all do, that blacks are far more athletic then white. I don't care how PC you are or what utopian society you live in, the facts are when it comes to certain athletic skills, black athletes are better then whites. This is primarily the message that Coach DeBerry was trying to get across, which I think he did wonderfully, without insulting anybody.
The major problem the coach has is that it is far more difficult for military academies to recruit quality athletes, regardless of their color, then it is for other division 1 schools That combined with his old school wing T offense makes it very hard to get top caliber athletes, black/white/hispanic/asaian/eskimo, into their program...
I do get your point though.... for a man in his position better to just not say anything at all then something remotely controversial...

Growing up a Christian, going to Christian school and participating in many Christian oriented sports camps, etc, I feel like DeBerry should be above this, but it is this type of insensitivity and (underlying) racism that not only plagues people as a whole, but also affects Christianity today. Instead of Christians being people/church where people feel welcome, Christians, (most of the time) are some of the biggest bigots and hypocrites in the world. It's unfortunate because Christianity in the world should be about love, taking care of the poor, etc, but instead many people get the idea that it's just about keeping some out, rather than letting all in. I am almost 100% sure that DeBerry has some underlying racism in his heart because he grew up in Cheraw, SC, where part of my family is from and believe me about that place. I realize the country is 71% white but why are some always allowed to make fun of white people? We make movies like "White Men Can't Jump" and love it, but there aren't any movies called "Black Men Can't Swim" or something like that. We continually, in this country, put the emphasis on sheltering some and attacking others and it perpetuates stereotypes and racism. We have to have a lesbian basketball player have an interview with ESPN the Mag and get broadcast across the Nation because she's a lesbian and "doesn't want to create a scene." It just frustrates me and this is about as random as I can be, but maybe you can make some sense of it.
That's a bunch of bullshit. I see more movies, shows, slang that black people use making fun of other black people then white people making fun of whites. You make no sense. There are groups of people all over the world that make fun of themselves, outside of black or white. This is not a new custom nor is it a white thing. There is an even greater growing problem in the world other then Christians being bigots....and that is people not having a sense of humor. Everybody's too afraid to toe the line in sarcasm and satire for fear of being called a racist, when people should just take it for what it is and laugh it off. Stop reading into things. Life is too short to get your panties in a bunch of something that isn't even there....
I have to comment on the woman hanging in the tree. How do you think we white Southern Baptists carry out all our lynchings. Do it around Halloween and nobody reallizes the black man's dead for a month.
