The Daily Nooner
Game 7...........there aren'y two better words in sports. Marty Met and Danny L. Price good luck to the Metropolitans tonight. I may actually sit down and watch more than 5 minutes of this game tonight, then again My name is Earl and Deal or No Deal are both on, so probably not.
I will give you some insight into my personal journal. Sunday October 15, Entry Time 11:15. Why I suck as a fantasy owner, reason #4,982,387,680. I really have no idea when to start what guys and why, whatever buttons I push never work (unlike Willie Randolph who seems to be throwing darts at a board and every move comes up genius). I currently have the two best (statistically) receivers in football, Roy Williams and Lavarneus Coles, the #2 & #10 RB (Stephen Jackson & DeShaun Foster) the #5 QB David Carr and the #4 kicker Jon Carney. All this has added up to a 0-5-1 record. Do you know how inept you have to be in order to do that?
Speaking of football it has been going on 2 years now that I have been making the argument for Steve Smith as MVP of the NFL. Well this season has done nothing to halt my personal quest to give the award to the most deserving man on the planet. Simply put, since 2003 when Steve Smith plays his team is 39-21 a .650 Winning percentage and when he does not play they are 7-11 a .388 winning percentage. Can it get much clearer than that, I don’t think. Take this year for example, 0-2 and people questioning everything about the team, Smith returns from injury 4-0 and up to 8th in this week’s edition of ESPN NFL Power Rankings. That is a far cry from 16th when they were 0-2 and people were pointing out that 0-2 teams rarely go to the playoffs. Now with Smith the Panthers are on a four game tear, they are the only team to beat New Orleans. Since Smith’s return the Panthers have played at Tampa Bay and at Baltimore (the #7 and #8 rated pass defenses in the league) and Delhomme and Smith have gone for 272 and 112 against the Bucs and 365 and 189 against the Ravens. The man is the best and the most valuable player in the game, at receiver no less, truly amazing.
You know what I don’t get, that Ali G./Borat guy and his new movie? I know I will probably get creamed for this because I guess I am no longer hip and with it, but what makes this guy so funny? Are the same people who watch this guy the ones who keep giving Jaime Kennedy work? I watched some of that Ali G show and it had some moments but by no means was some groundbreaking new comedy revelation. I doubt I will see the movie, I would be better served removing my own spleen with a spoon I bet, that or watching Talladega Nights (wasn’t that supposed to be a comedy classic, since it left theatres I haven’t heard one person mention it yet, but everyday I hear someone doing Caddyshack lines).
AND
Speaking of movies, I have seen a few recently but do not have time for long boring reviews. I saw “The Departed” and it was very good. First of all it had such a strong cast that it couldn’t help but be decent. And yes I am admittedly a Leo DiCaprio fan, I think he is far better that most give him credit for and one of the better American leading men out there. I also happen to think Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg are both fairly talented, you put them in a movie with guys like Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, and Jack Nicholson who we all know are talented and you have something special. The movie has all the Martin Scorcese trademarks, from music to the use of close ups and the fast to slow action that he uses so well, he just knows when to heighten the intensity of the movie. I would suggest seeing it; it is entertaining and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Lastly, just because you are in on the whole secret of the movie, it does not ruin the plot at all. I also saw the Dane Cook movie, “Employee of the Month.” IT was solid, nothing spectacular. It was a formulaic comedy movie that had its moments. Will I watch it again sometime, probably because I like Dane Cook but will it be something I own and show to people when the come over (like say, I dunno, Caddyshack) probably not. Lastly on the subject of movies, as you all know I am always interested in movies awards and I just recently bough “A Prairie Home Companion” (still the best movie released this year) and watched “The Departed” and both of these movies had great performances from numerous actors so much so that I couldn’t decided who’s was best and therefore maybe worthy of an Oscar Nomination. I wonder if the Academy has ever thought of putting in an ensemble category because so many movies have great ensembles and it seems unfair to just single one person out. Seriously, “A Prairie Home Companion” is entirely an ensemble vehicle, if one part were missing (yes even Lindsey Lohan) the movie would not have been nearly as good. Just wondering what some of my other movie nerd friends thought?
KEITH, I just saw your comments from my last post asking for the staff here to comment on the NFL season so far and the brawl during the Miami game. Here is what I can say on all of that, short and sweet. The NFL will suck until the correct the ills of the past two seasons and award the MVP Trophy to Steve Smith, and throw in this years trophy as well, until they do they will suck. As for the brawl, I haven't much to say. I am glad to see Florida International stepping up and throwing players off their team and even kicking two kids out of school for their indefensable behavior, unlike Miami who will probably make statues of those guys.

i understand the confusion about the Borat thing Josh. But I was mearly stating that people tell me how creative and original and groundbreaking this Ali G guy is and I just dont see it. I don't even see him as funny, certainly not original, creative or any sort of groundbreaking.
And like I said Employee of the Month is what it is. It is your typical 90 minute comedy, funny heartwarming and in the end every one is happy, somehow nobody gets arrested and the guy gets the girl.
I like Louis CK he is hilarious, not sure where you heard that Dane used some of his material. Here is the problem with Dane, people think he shot to stardom in like the last 18 months. He has toiled away as standup for going on 20 years now. I first saw him about 10 years ago and thought he was a fucking riot, and he has been ever since.
Slipps-
You should probably watch more then 5 mins of the Mets game. Maybe you can learn a little about how a team wins, if you've forgotten the '96-'98 Yanks. Small ball can win. Clutch hitting can win. Timely hitting can win. Bunting can win. The Yanks shoudld try some of this instead of signing more 45 HR guys for next season!!!
As far as the NFL MVP.... Peyton Manning is 48-10 since 2003! Or an .828 winning percentage. So why oh why would Steve Smith, a player who touches the ball maybe 10 times a game, get awarded the MVP over a guy who touches the ball about 60-70 times a game and has a much better winning percentage???? That's right because you're WRONG!!!!!!!
This seems to be something of a pattern for you! Welp, there's always the Knicks and Ronaldo Balkman to look forward to.... or maybe the Teaneck HS softball team stats!!!!
Lets Go Mets!
I don't find Ali G funny at all either. Maybe that's because I'm really funny and creative and much better looking, but regardless, this gyu sucks. And Borat is only groundbreaking and original to anyone that has never seen or heard of Yakov Smirnoff. Yakov funny, Borat NOT!
GO RUTGERS!
Danny, you proved my point for me, he is so valuable that even only touching the ball 10 times a game he clearly effects the outcome, that is absurd when you think about it.
Every touch of his is worth a higher percentage to his teams success. This is not to sya that someone like Manning, Barber, or Tomlinson are not important because they touch the ball more, but think of the focus and amount of the game is weighed in the balance of every one of Steve Smith's touch's.
Hey and don't hate on Rey-Rey, he will be the most popular athlete in New York over th next 3-4 years. But no Dan, not as popular as Jesus, who I do get.
Small ball can win, Danny. But so can powerball.
The Tigers finished in the top 8 of all of baseball in runs, homeruns, batting average and sluggging. And in "small ball" categories like Sacrifice hits they were 18th, sacrfices last and Stolen bases 24th. Slugging the ball can also win.
Squire,
You are either not a football fan or a stupid stupid person, either way you couldn't be any more wrong!
Tiki is selfish?? The little guy that runs between the tackles more then he runs outside of them? Doesn't break tackles?? Go watch a game. He gets most of his yards running up the gut, bouncing OFF defenders. He's one of the only "little" guys that is actually productive between the tackles. And he very very rarely goes down on the first hit. He rarely makes something out of nothing??? He constantly does that! He benefits from a good o-line?? The Giants have had one of the worst O-lines in football the last couple of years, and just recently have gotten "good"...not great! You honestly couldn't be more incorrect! As far as being selfish... I find a player that will work his team down the field running and catching and then NOT get the TD, selfish! Tiki does all the work and then a back up or a WR will get the glory. Yep, sounds selfish to me! I can tell you've played sports in your life! Do yourself a favor and stop discussing athletes you know nothing about and stick to reviewing Mystic River. I think you're more suited for that role!!!
